What is Thickness Measurement?
Thickness measurement is one of the most commonly used methods for inspecting and testing pipes, tanks, and similar items.
An ultrasonic signal is emitted and the returning echo is monitored to determine the thickness of a component. This is very often used in the oil, gas, and chemical industries.
During condition surveys of equipment in operation, ultrasonic testing is especially used for thickness measurement, enabling detection of reductions in wall thickness caused by erosion (mechanical wear) or corrosion (chemical wear).
During condition monitoring, thickness measurement can also be used to detect structural changes that may occur in some materials under high temperatures and, for instance, from hydrogen ingress into the material.
