Portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers, in addition to analyzing individual elements, can also classify around 1,500 standard grades via a built-in reference database. Besides steel, the equipment can analyze certain copper alloys.

The equipment is primarily used for sorting tasks. In addition, the analysis can be used to verify the chemical composition of parts or components where cutting out samples is not permitted or is impractical.
