X-ray (RT)

In a radiographic examination, X-rays are used because they have the property of being able to penetrate solid materials. X-rays are electromagnetic radiation, just like visible light.

Radiography can be applied to all materials and is independent of the material’s magnetic and electrical properties. It can also be used wherever one wants to see what is inside a component. This may be to check the component for internal discontinuities and joining defects (for example defects in welding, brazing, riveting, and bonding). It can also be used to investigate what is inside a component, whether something has become stuck in a hollow part, or is misaligned, etc. Dimensional measurements can also be carried out, for example measuring wall thickness in pipes and cylinders in hydraulic systems. With special flash X-ray tubes, components in rapid motion can also be examined, for example engines.
