Ultra-portable phased array scanner for corrosion mapping
Krautkrämer PAXYS from Waygate Technologies is a portable phased array ultrasonic scanner designed for corrosion and wall-thickness mapping in the oil and gas industry. Built around miniaturized comPAct technology, it integrates phased array electronics into a scanner weighing less than 1 kg.
PAXYS provides a practical upgrade from slow point-by-point manual UT measurements to an encoded scanner workflow. X/Y dual-axis encoding tracks scanner movement in both directions, producing repeatable thickness data and clear C-scan visualizations for consistent documentation of corrosion and wall-loss patterns.
Faster, more repeatable NDT inspections
Encoded scanning reduces operator dependence in probe placement and coupling. This supports more consistent datasets, fewer re-scans, and clearer reporting to integrity and maintenance teams. PAXYS offers an accessible route from conventional UT to phased array without the setup and training complexity associated with high-end PAUT platforms.
Field-ready for single-person operation
The scanner, water-feed pressure bottle, and a lightweight Windows tablet can fit into a single backpack. This makes the system well suited to rope access, confined spaces, and pipe inspections in trenches where portability and simple deployment are critical.
The four-wheel design provides stable load distribution, while magnetic wear shoes help hold the scanner on vertical and inverted steel surfaces. The wear shoes include integrated couplant channels and are available in several radii for flat and curved components.
Connectivity and a future-ready platform
PAXYS connects through standard USB and works with Windows 11 tablets, laptops, or desktops using Acquire Software. Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity on the connected computer can support data collection, storage, and analysis on customer networks. Its modular architecture and interchangeable probe modules are designed to extend the platform across additional ultrasonic inspection applications.
Applications
- Corrosion and wall-thickness mapping and reporting for oil and gas assets
- Turnaround, shutdown, and outage inspection work
- Routine maintenance inspections
- Rope access and confined-space inspections
- Pipe inspections in trenches and other difficult-access locations
comPAct technology
Patented comPAct technology significantly miniaturizes PA electronics compared with traditional phased array instruments. Its reduced power demand allows PAXYS to be powered through a standard USB connection while keeping the scanner compact and lightweight.
